In 1750 he published "Brachygraphy" which formed the basis of the modern day shorthand. Gurney shorthand pre-dates Pitman by some 87 years. Thomas Gurney died in 1770 and was succeeded by his son Joseph. Joseph Gurney built up an extensive parliamentary and legal practice. In 1813 William Gurney was appointed the first Shorthand Writer to the Houses of Parliament. Amongst others, Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Charles Dickens were notable practitioners of Gurney shorthand. Significant events that were recorded verbatim by Gurneys inclide the Trial of Queen Caroline 1820, wife of George, The Titanic Inquiry 1912, The Herald of Free Enterprise Ferry Disaster 1987 and the Penlee Lifeboat Inquiry 1982. Our Parliamentary work ensures that we are at the very heart of decision making in Britain. The work is varied, covering all aspects of political life. We recruit full time, part time and freelance verbatim reporters. The work is challenging but is well rewarded in terms of job satisfaction and renumeration. We can provide audio transcription training where applicable. Our requirements are minimum shorthand/steno speeds of 140 WPM with appropriate transcription skills. Knowledge of Microsoft Word is essential, as is a good standard of English.
